Beyond 2012 - an integrated Design Story

Athletes’ Village, Vesta House
A built environment design story

“We are proud to be associated with a monumental project for the UK such as London 2012.”

Rick Burgess,

Tell us about the early design brief

To develop and deliver the Concept Architects design intent and vision, while retaining a high level of quality, within an aggressive procurement driven programme.

How did it feel to be involved in such a large and important British project?

As PRP design & deliver large masterplan schemes, we are accustomed to working on similar projects, but the complex nature and number of parties involved proved challenging yet rewarding. We are proud to be associated with a monumental project for the UK such as London 2012.

What challenges did you face along the way?

An internal atrium extends from the ground level to the roof. The design of the roof light helped resolve the following issue: Daylight, thermal gains, ventilation and smoke extract.

What about specific design challenges?

The GRC Cladding detailing was complex and was facilitated by close coordination with the supplier and through the use of full size samples. Quality was upheld by the in-depth level of detailing and input and sign-off from all stakeholders.
